Gaetano Chiaveri designed the church from 1738 to 1751 for Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, who built it for his own use and that of high-ranking officials. A high-level walkway connects it to Dresden Castle. The infobox gives founding in 1739. It was consecrated on June 29, 1751 and completed in 1755. The article names no style for the building and gives no dimensions or materials. The pulpit by Balthasar Permoser is Rococo.
It holds a restored Gottfried Silbermann organ, described as his last work. Four crypts include the Founders' Crypt, which holds Augustus III, Queen Maria Josepha and the heart of Augustus the Strong, and the remains of the last King of Saxony.
The bombing of Dresden in February 1945 badly damaged the church. The East German government rebuilt it by 1962, and further restoration followed reunification. Entry is free during daytime hours.
