The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was built from 1962 to 1964 for the Music Center of Los Angeles County. Welton Becket and Associates designed it, using a total design approach that covered fixtures and interior finishes. Peter Kiewit and Sons built it. Construction began on March 9, 1962, and it was dedicated on September 27, 1964. The opening concert was on December 6, 1964, with Zubin Mehta conducting and Jascha Heifetz as soloist.
The hall has 3,156 seats on four tiers, with chandeliers and wide curving stairways. The article does not name its style or materials.
The Academy Awards were held here in many years, from 1969 to 1999. It is home to the Los Angeles Opera. It opens free to the public one day a year, for the Holiday Celebration.
