Doberan Minster was the second abbey church of Doberan Abbey, the first abbey in Mecklenburg, founded in 1171. Its construction began around 1280, and the church was consecrated in 1368. Duke Pribislav sponsored the monastery and was later buried in the church. The article describes a High Gothic brick church based on French cathedral style and shaped by Cistercian building rules.

Its treasures include a main altar described as the oldest winged altar in art history, a cross altar called the most monumental of its kind in Europe, and a tabernacle 38 feet (11.6 meters) high, the oldest of its kind in Germany. An astronomical clock dates from 1390.

The abbey was dissolved in 1552 after the Reformation, and the church is now the main Lutheran church of Bad Doberan. Concerts are held on Fridays from May to September.
