The Mengujekid dynasty built the mosque and hospital in 1228 and 1229, and the north portal gives the date as 626 AH. The mosque's patron is named as Ahmadshah ibn Sulayman, and the hospital is ascribed to Turan Malik, daughter of Fakhr al-Din Bahramshah. The chief architect's name is read as Khurramshah ibn Mughith al-Khilati, indicating origin in Ahlat.
The mosque adjoins the hospital and shares its southern qibla wall. The tall north portal, the main entrance, is known for dense high-relief stone carving, while the hospital portal's carving is less dense and in places appears unfinished. Stone piers support stone vaults, and the central bay is open to the sky.
A wooden minbar is dated 1243. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 1985. A restoration decided in 2010 began in 2015, halted in 2019 for financial reasons and resumed in 2022, and the mosque reopened to visitors in May 2024.
