Dionysios, later Saint Dionysius of Korisos, founded the monastery in the mid-14th century, and it is dedicated to John the Baptist. Its main benefactor was Alexios III Komnenos, emperor of Trebizond. His chrysobull of September 1374 is kept in the monastery's archives. The article names no architect.

The infobox gives the style as Byzantine, and the article gives no dimensions or materials. It records no fires or restorations. One late 15th century description by Isaiah calls the monastery Serbian, but a footnote says he no doubt means Dionysiou, so the identification is uncertain.

It is one of twenty self-governing monasteries on Mount Athos and ranks fifth in the Athonite hierarchy. It is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and access is for men only.
