Amanullah Khan built the palace as part of a plan for a new capital, Darulaman. The article credits the German engineer Walter Harten and his team with the design, while the infobox also lists A. Godard and M. Godard as French architects. The infobox dates construction from 1925 to 1927, and the text says it began in the early 1920s.

It is a brick building of three floors and 150 rooms, in a European neoclassical style, with a U-shaped plan and four domed towers on the roof. It stands about 108 feet (33 m) tall. Marble spiral staircases link the floors, and Corinthian columns line the third-floor galleries.

Fire gutted it in 1968, and it was damaged again in 1978, 1990 and the civil war of the 1990s. Restoration began in 2016, at a reported cost of 10 or 16 to 20 million dollars, and was largely done by July 2019. The article says it is open to visitors.
