The museum occupies the town's old theatre, which was burned during the Spanish Civil War and stood in ruins. In 1960 Salvador Dalí and the mayor of Figueres decided to rebuild it as a museum. The city council approved the plan in 1968, construction began the next year, and it opened on September 28, 1974. Joaquim de Ros i Ramis and Alexandre Bonaterra are named as architects, and it expanded in the mid-1980s.
Dalí wanted it to be "a single block, a labyrinth, a great surrealist object." A glass geodesic dome crowns the former stage, and giant eggs top the roof parapet. The old audience space is now an open-air courtyard. Dalí is buried in a crypt below the stage floor.
It drew 1,368,755 visitors in 2016. The article gives no dimensions or ticket details.
