Primate Michał Stefan Radziejowski had this palace built in Warsaw around 1686, to a design by the architect Tylman van Gameren. The article gives that date as approximate. The building was altered over the following decades, and it took on a Rococo character during work carried out between 1752 and 1765.
The palace burned in 1939, during the Second World War. It was reconstructed between 1948 and 1959 under the architect Stanisław Brukalski. The result is a building whose present form reflects three periods: its late seventeenth-century origins, its eighteenth-century update, and its postwar rebuilding.
Today the palace houses the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, so it remains a working institution rather than a museum. It was designated a Historic Monument of Poland in 1994.
