Sigismund of Luxembourg gave the castle to John Hunyadi's father, Woyk, in 1409. Construction began in 1446 under Hunyadi, Voivode of Transylvania, who transformed an earlier keep built by Charles I of Hungary. Hunyadi died in 1456 and work stagnated. The Matthias Wing was commissioned from 1458, and work stopped completely in 1480.
The castle stands on a rock above the Zlaști River and combines Gothic and Renaissance forms. It has a double wall, rectangular and circular towers, an inner courtyard and balconies with stone carvings. The Knights' Hall and Diet Hall are decorated with marble. The 17th century added a large palace, the White Tower and the Artillery Tower.
The article calls the current form the result of a fanciful restoration after a disastrous fire and long neglect. It drew about 276,000 visitors in 2021. Hours are 12 pm to 8 pm on Mondays and 9 am to 8 pm Tuesday to Sunday.
