The Coronation Cathedral in Alba Iulia was built in the western part of the citadel, on the site of a gatehouse. Groundbreaking was in 1921, and it was completed in 1922 to commemorate the Union of Transylvania with Romania. The infobox credits Victor Gheorghe Ștefănescu as architect, and the text does not name one. The plan is an inscribed Greek cross modeled on the Târgovişte Princely Church, in a national style drawing on Brâncovenesc forms.
The nave's four octagonal columns are coated in Moneasa marble, and the iconostasis is carved oak. The bell tower rises 58 meters (190 ft), though the infobox gives a maximum height of 40 meters.
King Ferdinand and Queen Marie were crowned on October 15, 1922. The ceremony was held outside, because Ferdinand was Roman Catholic. It is the seat of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Alba Iulia.
