Heinrich Wenck, head architect of the Danish State Railways from 1894 to 1921, designed the current station. The Rigsdag decided in 1904 to build it, after rejecting several of his multi-story proposals as too lavish. It opened on November 30, 1911, with the first train on December 1. It replaced stations of 1847 and 1864.

The article calls the style National Romantic, a Nordic style often considered a form of Art Nouveau. The exterior is brick, slate and granite with many decorative details, and the departure and arrival halls have wooden arch construction. Sandstone figures by Jens Lund decorate the main facade. Foundations and platform structures are reinforced concrete.

An overhaul from 2004 to 2008 replaced the roof and lengthened platforms. It has seven platforms, with 15 tracks in the infobox and 13 in the text. DSB operates it, and the main hall is open from about 4:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. The article states no heritage listing.
