Adolf Leonard van Gendt designed the Concertgebouw, inspired by the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, which was built two years earlier. Construction began in 1883 on a pasture and was completed in late 1886, at a cost of 300,000 Dutch guilders. It opened on April 11, 1888, with an orchestra of 120 musicians and a chorus of 500 singers. The infobox lists the style as Neoclassical.
The Main Hall seats 1,974 and measures 144 by 92 feet (44 by 28 m), with a height of 56 feet (17 m). Its reverberation time is 2.8 seconds empty and 2.2 seconds with an audience. The oval Recital Hall seats 437. The building stands on 2,186 wooden piles, each 39 to 43 feet (12 to 13 m) long.
Sinking was found in 1983, and a restoration from 1985 to 1988 replaced the wooden piles with concrete pillars. Pi de Bruijn designed a modern annex with a new entrance and a basement.
