Hubbell & Benes, a Cleveland firm, designed the 1916 building as the centerpiece of Wade Park. It is neoclassical and Beaux-Arts in style, clad in white Georgia marble, and cost $1.25 million. It opened on June 6, 1916.

Hays and Ruth added a north wing in 1958 that doubled the floor space. Marcel Breuer's 1971 north wing has a stepped, two-toned granite facade and became the main entrance. Dalton, van Dijk, Johnson & Partners added a west wing in 1983 with nine galleries.

Rafael Viñoly's expansion demolished the 1958 and 1983 additions and built new east and west wings around a glass-roofed atrium. The east wing opened on June 27, 2009, and the west wing on January 2, 2014. Total floor space is 592,000 square feet (55,000 m²). The article gives the cost as $258 million and $350 million. General admission is free.
