Clapham Junction opened on March 2, 1863. A joint venture of the London and South Western Railway, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and the West London Extension Railway opened it. The article names no architect or style and gives no construction start.

It has 17 numbered platforms, though the infobox says 16 are in use and the text says platform 8 is used only by non-stop trains. The south-west entrance has a more traditional appearance, with a Victorian station building behind a large forecourt and a wide covered footbridge serving all platforms.

About 50 million pounds of improvements brought new entrances and retail in the early 2010s. The south-west entrance reopened in May 2011 with lifts, and a new East London line platform opened on December 9, 2012. Network Rail manages the station.
