Santiago Calatrava designed most of the complex, and Félix Candela designed L'Oceanogràfic. Construction began in July 1996. L'Hemisfèric opened on April 16, 1998, and L'Àgora, the last building, opened in 2009. The article gives the total cost as 1.2 billion euros and calls it a three-fold rise on the 1991 estimate of 300 million, which does not match, since 1.2 billion is four times that figure.

The Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe, opened in 2000, is 722 feet (220 m) long, 262 feet (80 m) wide and 180 feet (55 m) high, with 215,000 square feet (20,000 m²) of glass. L'Umbracle, opened in 2001, is 1,050 feet (320 m) long. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, opened in 2005, has a metallic roof 755 feet (230 m) long.

The Assut de l'Or Bridge, opened in 2008, has a 410-foot (125 m) pylon, the city's highest point. Trencadís, a ceramic tile mosaic, covers many concrete surfaces.
