King Frederick William IV of Prussia founded the Church of the Redeemer at Sacrow, and Ludwig Persius built it from the king's drawings. Ferdinand von Arnim was in charge of construction. Work began in 1841, and the church was dedicated on July 21, 1844. The infobox lists Byzantine Revivalism, and the text describes Italian Romanesque Revival.
The brick church extends into the Havel so that it resembles an anchored ship. It is over 30 feet (9 meters) high, 59 feet (18 meters) long and 26 feet (8 meters) wide, with a separate campanile over 66 feet (20 meters) high. Twelve linden-wood apostle statues were carved by Jakob Alberty.
The Berlin Wall of 1961 cut across the church property, and services ended on Christmas Eve 1961. Restoration ran from 1993 to 1995. Regular worship has continued since 1995.
