Admiral Majone di Bari founded the church. The infobox and text give 1154, while the text also says it was founded around 1160. The article names no architect, and gives the infobox style as Romanesque, though the text describes an Arab-Norman building with Byzantine and Islamic-linked features. It gives no dimensions.

The plan is rectangular. Spolia columns carry Byzantine-style arcades, and three red domes crown the roof. An original mosaic pavement and main altar survive. In the 18th century it served as a post office, and it was restored in the 19th century toward its medieval form.

It is an active Catholic church annexed to Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, and it has belonged to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre since the 1930s. UNESCO inscribed it in 2015 with Arab-Norman Palermo.
