Christian IV planned Christianshavn in 1617 as a merchant town that needed a church. Lambert van Haven designed the present church, begun in 1682 and inaugurated in 1695 by the text and 1696 by the infobox. It is Dutch Baroque, with a Greek cross plan. The walls are red and yellow brick on a granite foundation, with sandstone details and a black-glazed tile roof.
Lauritz de Thurah designed the spire, which replaced van Haven's design and was approved in 1749. It was finished in 1752 and is 295 feet (90 m) high. An external staircase turns four times counterclockwise around it, inspired by Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, and the climb is about 400 steps, the last 150 outside.
It belongs to the Church of Denmark. The article says the legend of an architect's suicide is false.
