Giacomo della Porta began the palace in 1562 and designed the courtyard fountain. After Pietro Aldobrandini bought a house on the site in 1578, Matteo Bartolini took over the project, and Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini resumed construction in 1616. The infobox gives completion in 1580 and lists Carlo Maderno, though the text does not mention his work. It names no style.

The Chigi family, bankers from Siena, bought the palace in 1659, and Felice della Greca and Giovanni Battista Contini remodeled it. It has five floors and a broad stairway to the main rooms, and it overlooks Piazza Colonna and Via del Corso. The fountain has been copied elsewhere in Rome and Italy.

The Kingdom of Italy bought it in 1916, and since 1961 it has housed the Council of Ministers and the prime minister. A restoration of the facades and the prime minister's rooms was completed on November 7, 1999. The article gives no public access details.
