Work on the keep began around 1337, and the three lower levels were finished by 1364. Charles V moved in during 1367 or 1368, and the keep was completed in 1369 and 1370. The outer enclosure was built between 1372 and 1385. The article does not say who designed the medieval keep and enclosure.

The keep is 164 feet (50 m) tall in the main description and 171 feet (52 m) in the history section, and the article calls it the tallest fortified structure in Europe. The rectangular enclosure measures 1,083 by 574 feet (330 by 175 m), with walls 38 feet (11.5 m) high.

The Sainte-Chapelle, begun in 1379, is modeled on the one in Paris but has a single level. It is Gothic, with Flamboyant elements on the west front, and was completed in 1552. Louis Le Vau designed the King's and Queen's pavilions in the French classical style.
