The earliest documented reference is from 1253, when the castle was the residence of Witiko of Prčice of the Vítkovci family. The Rosenbergs took control in 1302 and began a Renaissance makeover under William of Rosenberg. Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg received the dominion from Ferdinand II, and Johann Christian I led Baroque renovations. The Schwarzenbergs inherited it in 1717, and it became state property in 1950.
The oldest part, the Hrádek, has a 13th-century tower. The Lower Castle has a large irregular courtyard, with a stone fountain from 1641, and the Upper Castle is reached by a brick bridge across a moat. The Cloak Bridge, dated 1764, has five stories and links the Upper Castle, the theater and the gardens. The article gives no tower height.
The Baroque theater, dated 1767, is called one of the best-preserved Baroque theaters in the world. The late Baroque gardens have a cascade fountain. UNESCO listed the castle in 1992.
