Clan MacDougall, then Lords of Lorn, built an original small fort around 1320. The Stewarts later held the lordship and are believed to have built the castle in its present form, around the 1440s. The article names no architect and gives no materials. It is a four-story tower house on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, which the article calls one of the best preserved medieval tower houses in western Scotland.

Around 1620 a drunken bet transferred the castle to Clan Campbell, who abandoned it around 1840 after it lost its roof. Charles Stewart of Achara bought it in 1908 and carried out basic conservation. Lt. Col. D. R. Stewart Allward acquired it in 1965 and restored it over about ten years.

It is privately owned and open at selected times in summer, depending on the tide. It is a Category A listed building and appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
