The Castle of Óbidos stands on a hill 259 feet (79 meters) above sea level, on a trapezoidal plan. Afonso I's forces took the Muslim-held settlement in 1148, and Sancho I completed the conquest of the castle in 1195. King Afonso II gave the town and castle to his wife, Urraca, in 1210. Later, Queen Leonor chose it as her residence.
The walls have a perimeter of 5,135 feet (1,565 meters) and rise up to 43 feet (13 meters). The article notes Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Manueline influences. The Lisbon earthquake damaged it in 1755, and in 1808 it fired the first artillery rounds of the Battle of Roliça.
The castle became a pousada in 1948 under a project by João Filipe Vaz Martins, and it is classified as a National Monument.
