The Castillo de Almodóvar del Río stands about 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Córdoba, on the left bank of the Guadalquivir. The Emirate of Córdoba built it in the eighth century on the site of an earlier Roman fort, and its Arabic name, Hisnu-l-mudawar, means the round castle. It was renovated and rebuilt several times in the Middle Ages, including a restoration by Alfonso XI in the fourteenth century, and it was a royal residence of Pedro I and Enrique II.
The 12th Count of Torralva restored it between 1901 and 1936, under the technical direction of the architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova. Its notable towers are the Cuadrada, the Redonda and the Homenaje, and it also has the King's Hall.
It is privately owned and open to the public. It served as a filming location for Game of Thrones, where it depicted Highgarden and parts of Casterly Rock.
