The original fortress dates from the 1200s in the infobox and is documented from 1275 in the text. King Robert of Naples enlarged it in 1329. Pedro Luis Escrivá, a military architect from Valencia, designed the six-pointed star form, built from 1537 to 1547 for Don Pedro de Toledo. The article names no style, and calls it a Renaissance-era fortress with bastions and a moat.
It is built of volcanic tuff. A lightning strike on the munitions depot in 1587 destroyed the church and officers' quarters, and Domenico Fontana led the rebuilding from 1599 to 1601. It served as a military prison until 1952.
A restoration from 1976 to 1983 added a 700-seat auditorium. The Comune di Napoli owns it, and it is a museum and exhibition hall.
