The house was built in 1904 as the Kahlo family home, and the article names no original builder. It is two stories around a central courtyard in the colonial tradition, covering 8,600 square feet (800 m²), with the courtyard at 4,300 square feet (400 m²). Diego Rivera added the wing enclosing the courtyard from 1941, and Juan O'Gorman redesigned the house in 1946.
The exterior walls are cobalt blue. The entrance hall has a natural stone mosaic by Mardonio Magaña, and Rivera's wing uses volcanic rock. In 1937 the street windows were bricked up and a high wall built for Trotsky's safety.
Rivera donated the house to the Mexican nation, in 1957 or 1958 by the article's accounts. A restoration ran from 2009 to 2010. It is funded by ticket sales and donations.
