The Carltheater stood at Praterstraße 31 in Leopoldstadt, Vienna. Its predecessor, the Leopoldstädter Theater, was sold in 1838 to the director Carl Carl. The building was partly demolished and rebuilt in 1847 to plans by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, who later designed the Vienna State Opera. It opened under the Carltheater name that year.
Nestroy premieres were staged there, and he was director from 1854 to 1860. The theater became known for Viennese folk pieces and operettas. Puccini's La rondine was commissioned by the theater, but its Vienna premiere was cancelled when the Italo-Austrian war broke out.
It closed in 1929. A bomb attack in 1944 almost entirely destroyed the auditorium, and the facade was demolished in 1951. The Galaxy building now occupies the site.
