The original church of St David was built in 1842 on David Street and cost £2,124. Fundraising in Wales and Ireland paid for it, along with a donation from Lady Catherine Eyre of Bath, who asked for the St David dedication. Pugin and Pugin designed the current building on Charles Street, which was built from 1884 to 1887 in the Gothic Revival style. The article gives dates for the infobox that differ from the text.
It became the seat of the Archbishop of Cardiff in 1916, and the cathedral of the new archdiocese was declared in 1920. Incendiary bombs pierced the roof in March 1941. F. R. Bates, Son and Price supervised the 1950s rebuild, and it reopened in March 1959.
It is one of three UK Catholic cathedrals with a choir school.
