Francesc Mitjans and Josep Soteras designed Camp Nou with Lorenzo García-Barbón. The first stone was laid on March 28, 1954, and the stadium was inaugurated on September 24, 1957. Its design was inspired by De Kuip in Rotterdam, with oval rings around the pitch and continuous stands without open corners. Capacity at opening was 106,146.

An expansion for the 1982 World Cup added 22,150 seats, bringing total capacity to 121,401. In 1993 and 1994 the pitch was lowered by 8 feet (2.5 m), and standing room was replaced with seats.

Nikken Sekkei, with Pascual i Ausió Arquitectes, won the Espai Barça renovation competition in March 2016. Work began on June 1, 2023, and the stadium reopened in phases, with the first competitive match on November 22, 2025. As of March 2026 capacity was 62,652, and the plan is 105,000. The club museum opened in 1984 and draws more than 1.2 million visitors a year.
