The Burgtheater first opened on March 14, 1741, at the Hofburg on Michaelerplatz, the date in the infobox. The company moved to its present Ringstrasse building on October 14, 1888, after the last performance in the old theater that month. Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer designed the new house. The article does not name an architectural style.
Gustav Klimt, Ernst Klimt and Franz von Matsch painted frescoes on theatrical history, from Sophocles' Antigone to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, including Moliere's drama. The article gives no seating capacity for the current house.
A United States Air Force bombing raid largely destroyed the theater on March 12, 1945, and a fire of unknown origin caused further damage on April 12. It was rebuilt between 1953 and 1955.
