Bishop Mauricio and King Ferdinand III promoted Burgos Cathedral, and the first stone was laid on June 20, 1221. The article says it was consecrated in 1260, though services were held from 1230. It is a Latin cross church in the style of French Gothic, with later Flamboyant, Renaissance and Baroque elements. After a hiatus of almost 200 years came major 15th- and 16th-century work, and the last additions, including the Chapel of Saint Thecla, were finished in 1734.
Juan de Colonia raised the open spires on the west towers between 1442 and 1458. Diego de Siloé built the Golden Staircase in the early 1520s, modeled on Bramante's stairway in the Vatican. Juan de Vallejo and Felipe Vigarny built the new crossing dome after a hurricane brought down Colonia's original.
The cathedral holds the tomb of El Cid and his wife Doña Jimena. UNESCO listed it on October 31, 1984, the only Spanish cathedral listed on its own.
