The castle was founded before 1025 and passed to the Wittelsbachs in 1168. Duke Otto I extended it after 1180, and Henry XIII began work on the main castle in 1255. The text gives a length of 3,448 feet (1,051 m), which it says Guinness World Records confirmed, making it the longest castle complex in the world. French troops under Michel Ney destroyed the outer fortification in 1800.
The main palas houses the Castle Museum, with a branch of the Bavarian State Picture Collection.
