The Prince-Bishops of Trent built Buonconsiglio Castle, and the oldest and most dominant building, the Castelvecchio, dates from the thirteenth century. Bishop George of Liechtenstein enlarged it in the late fourteenth century. Prince-Bishop Bernardo Clesio commissioned the Renaissance Palazzo Magno in the first decades of the sixteenth century, and the Giunta Albertiana followed in 1686.
The article describes a mix of styles: Gothic, Italian Renaissance, Venetian Gothic in the loggia, and International Gothic in the frescoes of the Eagle Tower. That tower holds the Cycle of the Months, attributed to Mistr Václav from Bohemia. Dosso Dossi, Battista Dossi and Girolamo Romanino painted frescoes in the castle.
It was the seat of the Prince-Bishops until 1803. Austria later used it as barracks and a jail. Restored in the 1920s, it has housed the Provincial Gallery of Art since 1992.
