The article describes a 15th-century tower house. The infobox gives about 1425, while the text says building started around 1450 and was completed under Sean Finn, who died in 1467. The builder may have been Maccon Sioda MacNamara, but this is uncertain. It names no architect and no materials for the present castle. The O'Briens expanded the site around 1500, and Donogh O'Brien added a lead roof.
The Studdert family let it fall into disrepair after building Bunratty House in 1804. The Royal Irish Constabulary used it as a barracks in the mid-19th century, and the Great Hall roof collapsed in the late 19th century. Viscount Gort restored it in 1956 with the Office of Public Works.
It opened to the public in 1960. Clare County Council now owns it, and it is a National Monument of Ireland.
