Adrien Blomme, Yvan Blomme and Fernand Petit designed the current station. It opened on October 4, 1952, though its buildings were erected between 1939 and 1954. It replaced Auguste Payen's neoclassical station of 1869, which was demolished in 1949 for the North-South connection. Marc De Vreese designed a terminal building for high-speed trains in 1992.

The infobox gives the style as Modernism, and the text calls it post-war functionalist. It lists 12 platforms and 22 tracks. The Eurostar side has two bay platforms, where passengers clear border controls before boarding.

SNCB/NMBS owns and operates it. The article names no client or heritage listing, and it gives no materials. The Gare du Midi metro stop lies beneath it, and it stands at Avenue Fonsny in Saint-Gilles.
