Hiob Bretfus built a 16th-century brick castle here. Tylman Gamerski rebuilt it from 1691 to 1697. Jan Klemens Branicki began his own transformation in 1726 into a French-planned Baroque residence. Johann Sigmund Deybel directed the facade, tympanum and tower domes from 1728, and Jakub Fontana added rococo interiors from 1750 to 1771.

The infobox gives construction as 1691 to 1697, though the text describes major work through 1771. A 1884 institute for noble girls added styleless buildings that the article says irreversibly altered the Baroque structure. Bombing and fires in World War II caused about 70 percent damage.

It was rebuilt after the war as a matter of national pride, and Stanisław Bukowski led the project from 1947 to 1949. The Medical University of Białystok occupies it, and the article gives no visiting details.
