Gustaf Bonde, the Lord High Treasurer, commissioned the Bonde Palace as his private residence. It was designed and built from 1662 to 1667, and the article credits Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and Jean De la Vallée, though its body text names Simon de la Vallée and Tessin the Younger. It draws on French Baroque and Renaissance prototypes. The H-shaped plan has two southern wings flanking a main court and northern wings enclosing a small Baroque garden.
The facades have Ionic pilasters, festoons and portraits of Roman Emperors. A fire in 1710 destroyed the original roof, and another in 1753 led to a reconstruction by Johan Eberhard Carlberg. The city bought the palace in 1730 to relocate the Town Hall.
Ivar Tengbom led a comprehensive restoration after the state took it over in 1948. The Swedish Supreme Court has been housed here since 1949.
