Antonio Rinaldi designed the Kamenny, or Stone, Theatre, which opened on September 24, 1783, with Paisiello's Il mondo della luna. The article calls the design Neoclassical. In 1802 Thomas de Thomon rebuilt it, and it was renamed the Bolshoi. Fire destroyed it in 1811, and it was restored in 1818.

Alberto Cavos modified the building between 1826 and 1836 to hold newer stage machinery. It was the principal theater for the Imperial Ballet and Imperial Russian Opera until 1886. The article names no client and gives no dimensions or materials.

In 1886 it was declared unsafe and demolished to make way for the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Director Ivan Vsevolozhsky had the ballet and opera moved to the Mariinsky Theatre.
