The Knights Hospitaller built the Castle of St. Peter on the mainland near Rhodes. The German knight architect Heinrich Schlegelholt supervised construction, which the introduction dates to 1402 and the body to 1404. The first walls were completed in 1437.
Each language of the Order had its own tower, and the English Tower was finished in 1413. The builders reused stones and reliefs from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Spanish knights rebuilt the chapel in Gothic style in 1519 and 1520.
The castle surrendered in 1522, though the introduction says the Ottomans took over in 1523, and the chapel became a mosque. The minaret was destroyed in 1915 and rebuilt in 1997. A museum of underwater archaeology was decided on in 1962. The article gives no dimensions or visiting details.
