Bergamo Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Bergamo and is dedicated to St. Alexander of Bergamo. Venetians demolished the earlier St. Alexander cathedral in 1561. A papal bull of August 18, 1697 established a single cathedral and chapter, and the church of St. Vincent was re-dedicated to St. Alexander.

Bishop Giovanni Barozzi commissioned a rebuilding of the St. Vincent church in the mid-15th century. Filarete claimed credit for the plans, so the attribution is uncertain. Carlo Fontana refurbished the church in 1689, and Filippo Juvarra designed the main altar. The plan is a Latin cross with a single nave.

A 19th-century renovation completed the Neoclassical west front in 1889. The baptistery, built in 1340 for Santa Maria Maggiore, was moved to its present site that year.
