A Norman castle stood here after 1066, and by 1464 it lay in ruins. Thomas Manners began a Tudor manor in 1528, and Parliamentarians razed it in 1649. John Webb designed a family home begun in 1654. The 5th Duke's wife, Elizabeth Howard, chose James Wyatt to rebuild it in Gothic Revival style from 1799. The infobox gives 1801 to 1832 for the renovation, and the article calls the result a mock castle.
A fire on October 26, 1816 nearly destroyed it, and works by Titian, Rubens, van Dyck and Reynolds were lost. Sir James Thornton was chiefly responsible for the rebuilding. The castle sits 453 feet (138 m) up, within an estate of about 15,000 acres.
David Manners, the 11th Duke of Rutland, owns it. Part is the family home, the state rooms are open, and it is Grade I listed.
