D. Manuel acquired the land in 1559 and built the Quinta de Belém. King John V bought the estate and ordered reconstruction in 1726 as a summer home. The infobox names João Pedro Ludovice, but the text says he supervised repairs after the 1755 earthquake. Mateus Vicente de Oliveira rebuilt the estate around 1770. The infobox calls the style Mannerist, while the text describes a mix of Mannerist and Baroque.

The building is L-shaped, with azulejo panels and formal gardens. The article gives no dimensions. Rafael de Silva Castro led renovations in 1886, and the interior was remodeled in 1902 and 1903.

It is the official residence of the President of Portugal and houses the Presidential Museum, opened October 5, 2004. It is a National Monument, dated 2006 in the text and 2007 in the infobox.
