The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi stands on Franciszkańska Street in Kraków's Old Town. Historians disagree about the founder. Duke Henry II the Pious is probably the founder, while Duke Bolesław V the Chaste and St. Kinga are widely regarded as founders for the rebuilding after the 1241 Mongol invasion. The article names no architect.
The original Gothic church was consecrated before 1269. The presbytery was elongated from 1401, and the cross-shaped central part dates from about 1420 to 1436. It is built of brick and sandstone. Stanisław Wyspiański designed the floral murals of 1895 and the apse stained glass.
A fire in 1850 was the most destructive in its history. A certified replica of the Shroud of Turin is displayed in the Passion of Christ Chapel. The church belongs to the Conventual Franciscans.
