The Basilica of the Heart of Jesus in Zagreb is linked to the return of the Jesuits to the city in 1855. Archbishop Juraj Haulik gave 60,000 florins in 1860, but that plan was not realized in unfavorable political and economic conditions. Archbishop Juraj Posilović revived the project about four decades later.
Land was bought in 1898 and the groundbreaking took place on August 27, 1901. The church was consecrated on December 15, 1902, so construction took slightly over a year. Janko Holjac was the architect, and Hermann Bollé designed the main altar. The article describes the style as Neo-Baroque.
The church is about 194 feet (59 meters) long and 81 feet (25 meters) wide, with room for roughly 3,000 people. It is the second largest church in Zagreb and was heavily damaged in the 2020 earthquake.
