The current basilica was built from 1974 to 1976 under Monsignor Guillermo Schulenburg, abbot of the basilica. Its architects included José Luis Benlliure and Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, and the image was moved there on October 12, 1976. The plan is circular, said to symbolize the tent that housed the Ark of the Covenant.

The roof is reinforced concrete covered in green oxidized copper sheets, and the interior has no columns. It is 138 feet (42 m) high, and the infobox gives a capacity of 10,000. Seven entrances lead in.

The old basilica, by Pedro de Arrieta, was begun in March 1695 and opened on May 1, 1709, though another section says construction ended in April 1709. The Archdiocese of Mexico owns the complex.
