Joseph Connolly, an Irish-Canadian architect, designed the church, and the article calls it his masterpiece. The lead gives construction as 1876 to 1888, while the body says it began in 1877. Dedication is 1888 in the text and 1883 in the infobox. The twin towers, which rise over 200 feet (61 m), were completed on November 13, 1926.

The style is High Victorian Gothic Revival in the text, Norman-Gothic in the infobox, and French Gothic Revival in the federal designation. The exterior is local limestone, and the interior has granite columns with acanthus capitals.

A restoration ran from 2007 to 2014. Pope Francis made it a basilica on December 8, 2014. It is a National Historic Site of Canada, designated in 1990, and a parish church in the Diocese of Hamilton.
