Bishop Adalberto II ordered the early Romanesque building around 999 to 1025, and the crypt was consecrated in 1019. The late Romanesque church was largely complete around 1225. The 1356 earthquake destroyed much of it, and Johannes Gmünd rebuilt it. Ulrich von Ensingen began extending the northern Georgsturm in 1421, and Hans Nussdorf finished the southern Martinsturm on July 23, 1500.
The walls are red sandstone from quarries at Wiesental and Degerfelden. The Georgsturm is 211 feet (64.2 m) tall and the Martinsturm 206 feet (62.7 m). Each tower has 242 steps. The rood screen was moved in the 1850s, and the floor returned to its original level in 1975.
The Swiss Reformed Church owns it. It is listed as cultural property of national significance.
