The infobox gives the opening as July 18, 1975, and the text says the modern station was built in the 1970s. It names no architect or client. The article describes it only as built in a modern airport style.

It is underground, with two platform levels, 7 island platforms and 14 tracks. Platforms 1 to 6 serve high-speed trains on standard gauge, and the other 8 tracks use Iberian gauge. Parts were remodeled for the high-speed AVE service, which began on February 20, 2008. The article gives no date for the remodeling.

Two entrances lead in, one on Plaça dels Països Catalans and one on Plaça Joan Peiró. Hotel Barceló Sants occupies most of the upper floors of the main building. Adif owns the station, and Renfe Operadora and SNCF operate services.
