The Prunksaal, or State Hall, is the central structure of the old Imperial Library in the Hofburg, between Josefsplatz and the Burggarten. Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach began it in 1721, and his son Joseph Emanuel finished it after his father's death in 1723. The text dates Charles VI's authorization of a permanent home to 1722.

Lorenzo Mattielli made the sculptures, and Peter and Paul Strudel carved the marble emperors, with Charles VI at the center. Daniel Gran painted the wall frescoes, and the dome fresco shows an apotheosis of Charles VI. Four large globes by Vincenzo Coronelli stand in the hall.

Under Maria Theresa the dome cracked, and Nikolaus Pacassi reinforced it with an iron ring. The article gives 12,229,285 items in the infobox but over seven million objects in a later section.
