The Gothic cathedral was begun in 1471 within the walls of Romanesque predecessors of the 11th to 13th centuries, and construction ran into the 18th century. The infobox names Juan de Colonia and Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón as architects, though the text does not. The infobox gives late Gothic for the interior and Baroque for the west facade, and the article notes a close relationship to German Gothic.

Later additions include a neoclassical cloister, Baroque towers and capitals, and a Renaissance portico. The plan is rectangular with apsidal chapels. The article gives no dimensions or materials. Antoni Gaudí designed the neo-medieval Episcopal Palace beside it, not the cathedral itself.

Spain declared it a national monument on June 3, 1931. It is an active Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Astorga.
